THE ONES THAT I HAD, CIRCA THE 1950S, HAD A SMALL CIRCULAR INSPECTION AND CONTACT CLEANING ACCESS PLATE AT THE BOTTOM, FROM WHICH YOU COULD SEE THE CONTACTS.
