Simplex repeater for FRS | 0001781707H80 | on 18/6/18 |
Thought I would ask this here. I had a licensed friend who called me today. He is working with a company (or at least their employees) that uses FRS radios to communicate on the property. They are not able to penetrate the steel building. He wondered about using the old Radio Shack Simplex repeater with FRS to help them penetrate the building. I told him I would search around the forums and ask around. It appears it can be done. Not sure about legality although you don't have to ID on FRS frequencies. I haven't used the RS simplex repeaters since the 1990's. I have one in a box somewhere. To me the answer would be for the business to invest in business equipment but I suspect that the business provides nothing and the FRS radios was a chepa answer for employees who wanted to communicate with each other on the property. I guess I am glad they didn't buy Boefengs and are using 2M or FRS w/5W. |

Fiberglass vs metal for mast material | 0001781707H80 | on 16/7/13 |
I have a 45' tower over a house with a metal roof. I used metal conduit to run a 15' mast on top of that. This gets me to the top of the tree line right behind the house (I live on a river bank on a ridge). Attached 10' up at the joint is my 160M OCF dipole. Attached at the top is my old Maldol Triband vertical. The antenna folds over onto the roof making access to the top easy. I am thinking of decreasing the weight of the mast by switching to the fiberglass military mast, My question is related to antenna performance when grounded to the metal mast (ground plane). the dipole obviously isn't. the vertical is via the antenna clamps by design. Am I asking for performance trouble by doing this switch? |
