WNY Section News – Updated 3 July 2025
2025 WNY Field Day Report
Judging by comments received, field day went well around the WNY section, even with the mediocre band conditions!
Saturday, I visited the RDXA FD site in Webster Park. I enjoyed visiting with my many good RDXA friends and met a few new members as well. RDXA had quite a few visitors and some of the kids got to use the antenna line launching cannon! Nothing like shooting a spool of nylon line around an open field! The kids enjoyed that! RDXA had a scout troop and many public park goers visit to check out what amateur radio was all about!
My next stop was the Rochester ARA, XARC (Xerox) and Monroe County ARES joint field day. I got there after a lot of people left for the night, but a good time chatting with everyone! They set up in Kent Park off Schlegel Rd. A nice site with plenty of room. Last year the Webster News did a great write-up on the XARC field day! It is really nice when you get such great support from the town!
Sunday, I headed for Rome to visit the Rome Radio Club. I got a bit of a surprise when channel 2 WKTV showed up looking to do a piece on Amateur Radio and field day. Mike Little KB2CCD and I were interviewed about what amateur radio and field day are all about. I am happy to say that RRC VP Mike KB2CCD, also our ASEC, did a great job! Rome Radio Club field day and amateur radio got a full 2 minutes on the WKTV evening news!
Then off to Canastota and Oxbow Falls State Park for the Madison Oneida ARC field day. They have a terrific site up on the hill overlooking Oneida Lake in the distance. A pavilion and nice open softball field to set-up! I got to chat with a few OCTEN members as well. That’s the Oneida County Traffic and Emergency Net which meets on the W2MO repeater.
It seemed like everyone had an FT8 station. I guess I’ll have to give that a try. I prefer CW as my main operating mode. RDXA had a satellite station. I’ve definitely got to that again! I have been a ham for a long time, and it’s still a lot of fun! Thanks, to everyone for the hospitality and letting me join in!
